Composer and producer Alper Tuzcu is releasing his new single “Şehir Akşam ve Sen” (meaning “The City, the Evening, and You" in Turkish) on Friday, October 6th, 2023, through Morning View Records. In this song, Tuzcu composed music for the 1959 poem of the same title by the legendary Turkish poet, Nazım Hikmet. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the death of the literary giant.

Nazım Hikmet is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. His work has been translated to more than 50 languages and continues to be immensely popular, both in Turkey and beyond. After he was exiled, Hikmet travelled widely, befriending many great artists and poets such as Pablo Picasso and Pablo Neruda. His poetry is characterized by this sense of cosmopolitanism and of universal emotions.

In his composition, Tuzcu has tried to capture the essence of this period of Hikmet’s life by using the bolero rhythm of Cuba as a playful reference to Hikmet’s trip to Havana, which he referenced in much of his work. Moreover, the bolero rhythm of “Şehir Akşam ve Sen" complements the romantic tone of Hikmet’s poem.

In terms of instrumentation, Alper Tuzcu is on the lead vocals and plays all the instruments on the track with the exception of the upright bass, which Italian bassist Carlo de Biaggio is in charge of. The song was mixed by renowned sound engineer Tatu Estela, who has previously worked with Jorge Drexler, Gustavo Santaollala, and Lenny Kravitz.

Hikmet, hayatının bu döneminde yurt dışında yaşadığı için Roma, Barcelona, Paris, Prag ve Havana gibi bir çok şehire seyahat etmekteydi. Bu dönemde Pablo Picasso ve Pablo Neruda gibi ünlü bir çok sanatçı ve şair ile de arkadaş olan Hikmet’in şiiri de evrensel değerlerlere daha da yakınlaştı. Alper Tuzcu da Hikmet’in bu dönemdeki Havana gezisine atıfta bulunarak Küba müziğinin bolero ritmini kullanarak şiiri bestelemiş. Şiir ayrıca romantik bir tonda yazıldığı için de bolero ritmi bu havayı da yansıtıyor.

New York ve Boston’da kaydedilen şarkının vokallerinde ve gitarlarda Alper Tuzcu bulunuyor. Basta Carlo de Biaggio bulunurken, geri kalan tüm prodüksiyon da Tuzcu tarafından yapıldı. Şarkının miks ve masteringini daha önce Jorge Drexler, Gustavo Santaollala, Lenny Kravitz ve Hermeto Pascoal ile çalışmış ünlü Arjantinli ses mühendisi Tatu Estela yaptı.
